The tide pool treasures presented in the previous post come from Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach, Oregon (pictured above). At low tide people gather to look at the starfish, sea anemones, hermit crabs and other wonders in the tide pools, while above the gulls, puffins, and cormorants circle the rock, their nests, and their young in a fever of activity. The young man in the red coat below is part of a team of volunteers who arrive at all low tides to provide educational information for the visitors, and help to preserve the wildlife. The folks who come to witness the daily, unrelenting struggle of all the life surrounding this rock are very respectful not to encroach too closely on this fragile ecosystem.
